Biography

Mukesh Jain is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at McMaster University, Canada. His research interests lie in large-strain metal plasticity and ductile fracture behavior of a broad range of lightweight metallic materials, with applications focused on the forming and joining of sheet metal components for the automotive industry. He is a founding member of the McMaster Manufacturing Research Institute (MMRI) and the Director of the Metal Forming Laboratory (MFL) at McMaster. Prof. Jain is an Editorial Board Member of the International Journal of Material Forming and a member of the Technical Committee of the International Deep Drawing Research Group (IDDRG).
Abstract
Forming limit curve is one of the key measures of sheet formability used in automotive stamping industry. The process of generating this curve is long, costly and labor intensive. To date, there is no method in place to rapidly generate a forming limit curve (FLC). This research sought to apply a cruciform geometry to the commonly used in-plane conventional Marciniak forming test to obtain multiple strain paths from a single specimen and efficiently obtain a FLC. The research also involved optimization of the various cruciform Marciniak specimen geometries using Abaqus finite element (FE) code to revise the specimen geometry iteratively to improve the range of strain paths and thus the quality of FLC. The FE optimization proved successful and has yielded significant results.
